Happy Halloween!

>> Sunday, October 31, 2010

When I was a kid, I was told about those people who goes tonight; they will go from house to house.  This is called 'pangangaluluwa.'  From house to house, they will sing songs that are meant to pray for our loved ones who already passed away.  But I never got to meet people like them when I was young.  I don't really know already how old that tradition was but my lolo used to tell me about it.  He said that the songs were never meant to be fun like Christmas carols because it's supposed to be odes for the souls.  In return, these people get to have something from the house.  I think it's probably the same as what carolers get when they sing their Christmas carols.

Still when I was young, the week before All Saints' Day was the time for ghost stories and scary movies.  And tonight is the last day for those stories.  In some other places, they go 'trick or treatin' which I don't know about growing up.  I heard about it when I was college, but that's just about it.

Where I grew up, it's all about getting ready for tomorrow.  The tombs of my lolos and lolas (and the rest of them relatives) are cleaned by this time and what we will need to make sagobe tomorrow are complete.  And a sagobe of that time will not be complete without langka.  And I don't know if it's just me, but I have observed that sagobe is the popular merienda during All Saints' Day.  The sagobe will be our merienda when we got home from the cemetery.  Is sagobe also a part of your merienda on All Saints' Day?

Anyway.

These days, there are Halloween parties.  There are trick or treats in more town that I have ever known and there will be more people going to bars that hosts halloween specials.

Undas 2010

We were just at the palengke today after mass.  There were flower stalls everywhere.  I guess many (if not all) of those tiangge stalls every Sunday have shifted to the flower business this weekend.

So, if you still don't have flower arrangements for your departed loved ones by now, there are a lot to choose from at the public market.  There are stalls who offer flower arrangements or you could just buy the flowers and arrange them yourselves.  That will unleash your creativity, I should say.

Also, if you are wondering about the mass services schedule tomorrow, there will be two mass services at the parish church:  one will be at 6:00 am and the other is at 8:00 am.  Then, there will be a service later at 3:00 pm at the Bagumbayan Chapel.  There will be no other mass in the afternoon.

I Saw Them Dance... Live!

>> Saturday, October 30, 2010

But I didn't have any pictures.

I didn't get to have that perfect moment to take a click because I was dissolved in the crowd.  There were just so many people.  My tita and I went upstairs thinking that we would get a better view there but the crowd was just everywhere.

If you were there yesterday, you know what I'm talking about.

The show started at about five minutes after three and that is really good practice!  There were about five singers who belted before NO CREW KRU went onstage.  They are one of the two dance groups that come from Laguna that joined Showtime but didn't make it to the finals.  But I say they are really good!  I already saw them perform live at the MCTAC Induction of Officers and they really have the niche.  I barely saw all those guys jump and hop and jump and hop because there were just so many people.  Anyway, the crowd was ecstatic when they saw the group.

Also in this show, they introduced the contestants for their search for Mr. and Miss Sunstar Mall 2010.  There were 12 boys and girls (or ladies and gentlemen) that are competing for the crown.  I'll check the details like the coronation day and the portions of the competition and share it with you later.

Then came another set of maybe three or more singers.  The last one was someone who joined Star Power and didn't quite make it.  But, she's really got the potential.  I say that maybe a little more time and a perfect timing will do it for her.

Then came the twelve girls that were randomly picked from the audience.  Before they got the chance to dance with XB Gensan, there was a funny game that made the program run a little longer and ran a little too late (for me).  The contest was the same with kiddie parties where the kids get to say "Happy Birthday" the longest but this time it's "XB Gensannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" instead.

The crowd went wild when XB Gensan finally hit the stage.  After their first short number (I was surprised that it was just so short, then later on I realized it was just a patikim), I got too tired standing and it was a little too late for us.  I couldn't stay until the show finishes. I still needed to do my errands.  I can still hear the crowd cheering as I was getting out the door.

The Admin Meets Clueless

The winner of the two tickets was Clueless.

We set up to meet at the Sunstar Mall to give her the tickets yesterday. Of course I knew who Clueless is right after the draw. Using the alias was truly one exciting thing for me until the revelation of the alias.

As you all know, Clueless happened to by my classmate in high school, then I featured here here in My Teacher, My Hero series, and she won the two tickets I gave away last week.

We sat down and talk about this site. I was surprised that she knows every entry I made and could talk about it enthusiastically. What an avid reader!

Anyway, this is one of my humblest ways in saying thank you to all who continuously supports Laguna Life. I'm still working on a lot more so keep on reading and watch out for other giveaways.

A Lap A Day To Good Health

If you're one of those who enjoy swimming not just as a summer thing with your friends and family, this is a place that you are looking for.

San Luis Sports Complex Semi-Olympic-Size Pool
At the San Luis Sports Complex, we have a semi-Olympic size pool perfect for doing your daily lap-ins.  It has eight lanes and the water is clean.  It has been maintained for the past years and for a minimal entrance, it is worth spending for your good health.
The pool has eight lanes with buoys that separate each lane
I also found out that swimming is not only the best exercise for asthmatic people.  It is the also the best exercise for senior citizens.  Senior citizens normally suffer from a simple form to a complicated case of arthritis and swimming does not hurt the bones.  It also makes them perform the range of motion exercises which is one of the main exercises that a senior citizen should always do to give his bones those movements that they do not regularly get out of normal activities.
My dad starts his lap-ins after warm-up and stretching
My dad goes there as early as 6:00 am to do his exercises almost everyday.  By the end of November, I might also join this daily exercise.  I would have but I was told that after surgery, it is better for me to stay away from pools that is why I needed to complete the year before swimming again.
If we must use the facility, let's do our part in obeying the rules
This is one of the reasons why I love living here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.  Aside from the laid-back atmosphere, there are facilities such as this which are just waiting for us.  But as always, let us do our part in keeping these facilities maintained.  This means that we should do our part in keeping it clean always and follow the pool rules.  It's not easy to maintain this kind of facility and it is just proper for us to obey the rules that would contribute to keeping the facility running.

My Teacher, My Role Model: Teacher Nancy Jurado Lava

>> Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Mama Nancy.

That's how me and my friends call her. She's the mother of my long-time friend. Mama Nancy is a very good cook. We always look forward to dinners at their home whenever there are occasions because we know that we will have a good eat and totally forget about our diet.

When I came home last year, I heard that my friend and his sibling wants her to retire already because of her health condition. But they could not persuade her. She didn't want to stop teaching because she still wanted to be with the kids. Her exact words were, "Nakakaawa naman ang mga bata..." That was what her son - our friend - said.

I asked her for an appointment to feature her on this blog and she agreed. I went a little early because I wanted to see the kids as they went out of their classrooms. But I actually had an extra treat because it was the school's Halloween party and the kids got to wear their costumes.

Teacher Nancy.

It was a few minutes before our appointment when I saw her walking on the school's pathway. Due to age, she gaits with a little limp. To think that her office is at the second floor where I was waiting. I had a good view of her while she talks to some kids greeting her and waving goodbye for the long weekend.

We sat in her office and I explained what this was all about and she started to talk about her career. Being polite and full of respect, I omitted asking the exact years.

Immediately after graduation from the Union College of Laguna in Sta. Cruz, she took a job as a subsititute teacher at the Duhat Elementary School. She did this to gain more experience. But after less than a year, she got a permanent teaching job at the Callios Primary School. She won't forget how she started because she said she was in-charge of everything: "I was the janitor, the teacher, the secretary, the principal."

One year has passed and she got another teaching job at the Bagumbayan Elementary School also here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, where she's teaching up to now. She started teaching Grade III pupils. Later on, she handled Grade IV students, then Grade V.

Currently, she is a special teacher - meaning no advisory class - and deals with office work most of the time. All in all, Teacher Nancy has 46 years of government service teaching. She's proud to say that she started with a salary of Php 212.00. She says she can't believe that with only that much, she could buy what she needed and wanted and was even able to send her sibling to school. Nowadays, her salary of Php 18,000.00 doesn't seem to be enough.

I wanted to know what were the hardships within the years. And it seemed that she shares the sentiment of Teacher Anna Liz and Teacher Abbie. Too much paper works. Staying late at night to check the papers and tabulate the grades. Teacher Nancy also complains about parents who pamper their kids too much.

But when I asked her what was her greatest achievement, I was really surprised with what she said.
"What made me go on teaching was what I felt when I was in the first year of my teaching experience. When the children I was teaching learned how to read. It made me decide that teaching is what I want to do. Since then, it felt like an achievement like no other when the students finally learn how to read. That in itself is an achievement. For me, the main function of a teacher is to teach. Once the students learn to read and write, I know that it is an achievement like no other. I feel like I have failed when students didn't learn."
Teacher Nancy is due to retire by the end of this month. When I asked her about achievements, what she said was just the quote above. Humble as she is, I learned from her son that she received numerous recognitions. And this year, she is the recipient of the "Outstanding Teacher" award for this year's Teacher's Day Celebration last October 5, 2010. Incidentally, the theme of the celebration is "My Teacher, My Hero."

Forty-six years of teaching kids to help them achieve their dreams, to make them become what they want to be.

What is written on her shirt in the picture (that I took after the interview) is a perfect way to describe what she did for every student during all those years:
"Teachers plant seeds of knowledge that grows with them forever."
Indeed, she shared forty-six years of her life helping children learn.

Teacher Nancy. My Teacher, My Hero this Tuesday.

Lunch at Chef Mau's

>> Sunday, October 24, 2010

If you're tired of fast foods and carenderias, you might as well take a little time to relax and travel to this place to get a serving of good food and homey ambiance.

Just before you hit the town proper of Liliw, Laguna, if you're coming from Pagsanjan, you will not miss this place.

We were seated and Jemay took our orders, who was polite, simple and friendly. The tempura salad was great. The molo soup was served hot enough for me to enjoy. I belong to the group of people who happens to love hot soups being served hot, but not hot enough to burn my tongue.

Not long after the molo soup came the pancit canton which was a big serving. Mind you, my friends and I are hard to please when it comes to servings. Just as we were finishing the pancit canton, the fried rice came with the crispy pata, our group favorite. That was one crispy pata here! Sorry, I forgot to take the pictures of the tempura salad and the molo soup.

The crispy, crispy pata
We couldn't get enough of Chef Mau's so we asked for the menu and ordered for fillet mignon steak.

Fillet Mignon Steak
I cook but couldn't get my potatoes right. But Chef Mau's did it great and the gravy was awesome with the beef.

Then, came dessert. My friends and I came to love crepe in any form. So, three of us got mango crepe.
Mango Crepe
Then, them ordered blueberry cheesecake.

Blueberry Cheesecake
I say this is a great place to bring your friends over for a lutong-bahay dinner. And if you have an occasion and looking for a catering service, they have Chef Mau Mobile.

Here's the facade of the resto.

Fried Chocolate

Finally!

I was wanting to taste this since I saw it the first time I went to the mall.

The last time, I traded it for the regular Miguelito's ice cream.  I didn't want to post anything about it until I get to compare.  But now, that I have tasted Miguelito's fried ice cream, I'd say that it is worth the Php 30.00 I doled out to try it.

The only thing is that you really have to wait for your serving.  It takes about two minutes to turn the shake into ice cream using that pan which is set at zero degrees freezing point.  Then, it takes about another minute to 'scrape' it off the pan and into the cup.

But, compared to the Miguelito's fudge they serve in about a minute, I find the fudge more expensive since the serving was small.

The 'chocolate fried ice cream' I ordered was good enough for my sister and I, considering we come from the group of people who go for big servings.

The ILC UN Celebration Yesterday

I didn't want to go that early because it was hot to go out. But I didn't want to miss these kids either.

So, we got there a little late for the opening ceremonies. At the entrance, my sister met one of her high school classmates and as they talked, I could hear the cutest voice of the kids introducing themselves. So, I left my sister and went ahead to the activity center.

The kids were introducing themselves then the country they represent, its capital and its landmark. And I say at that age, I don't really know how much a kid can retain, since I have no idea about all these.

I took this shot... a little patriotic but I love this:

Well, I really think that the UN celebrations and other kiddie celebrations will not be complete without singing the ever-popular song "I Am But A Small Voice." Here, the kids are still in their cultural dresses and singing the song with gestures.

Then, before I knew it, the dance number started. But I was excited about the Hawaiian thingy. It's not that wearing a grass skirt (lol) is my frustration, but I wanted to see the kids in this attire.

While everyone was taking pictures of their kids, I thought of the teachers. Aren't they dancing with the kids? Here you can see them in front of the kids and doing the dance, too... well a little discretely that maybe only I and some people noticed.

Then, of course, there has to be a folk dance. Well, there really has to be. I also feel that any presentation should have at touch of our heritage. And I feel really, really good when I see kids learning something about our culture.

Thanks to our friends from Infante's Learning Center. I have been invited on this event by one of their staffs, Ms. Jenny Ramirez. Now, if you have something happening in your school or office that you'd really like to share, let me know. After all, all good things are meant to be shared anyway.

Spoke Too Soon and Woke Too Late

>> Saturday, October 23, 2010

I had an appointment with a teacher yesterday. She's going to be the next feature in my My Teacher, My Hero series next week.

I went there a little early hoping for an opportunity to take snap shots of kids playing. But it was an extra treat for me when I got there and saw that the kids had just finished their Halloween program. The kids were all over the place and I had a lot of fun taking snap shots. I stayed on the second floor so that I could get a better view of how kids play today.

I think this is this generation's version of 'Luksong Baka'
But anyway, I found out that I spoke too early with my article, "Some Tips To The Polls." I found out from Mama that the system will be back to the old one since we are not using the PCOS machine. She said that instead of the 'clustering' that was done last May 2010, it's going to be back to 'per sitio' system wherein instead of the five precincts, there will be fifteen. I think with this system, the precinct number provided at the Comelec precinct finder will not work. So, I guess we all will have to check our names using the old way again. It's going to be posted in front of the precincts where we will look for the number. So, where you went to the last elections before May will be your precinct this time.

Today is Saturday, and I know I wrote about the aerobics session happening at 6:00 on Saturdays at the Muncipal Hall grounds. I wanted to join, get some sweats and meet people. But, what happened was I woke up too late and I got too lazy. And by the way, we heard that it's not for free anymore (if it ever was for free at all). We heard that there's something like Php20.00 charge. Not bad at all. Let me see if I can check it out next Saturday. Tell me if you can join and let's meet up. This will make me get up early next Saturday.

Anyway, did you know that October is the month of standing up against bullying? The color purple is the official color of saying "No to Bullying." This is an advocacy to stop bullying in schools because there are a lot of suicides that were caused by students who were bullied either in their schools or at their dormitories. The numbers are really getting bad and we should all do something to stop bullying.

I'm off to a busy weekend. Later today, at 2:00 pm, don't forget the "United Nation's Day Celebration" of Infante's Learning Center. It would be at the Activity Center of the Sunstar Mall.

Then, tomorrow at 3:00 pm, the coronation of Sunstar Mall's search for Miss Gay 2010 will be held also at the mall's activity center. This time, I don't think I'll make it because I have a lunch party to attend to.

I just hope this will be a dry weekend.

Happy weekend everyone!

Some Tips To The Polls

>> Friday, October 22, 2010

This is going to be a long weekend.

Look for your name on the list outside the precinct

The Barangay Elections is on Monday and it was declared a holiday.  Please don't ignore your right and your duty to vote.  When I was an OFW in Dubai, I took the effort to take a leave for a day just to go to the Philippine Consulate to register myself as an absentee voter.  You just don't know how I felt when I finally got my registration application.  But sad to say, my medical condition when I got here before the elections did not make me well enough to settle the transfer. These elections, I felt like something was stripped off me because I didn't get to do my right and duty.

But anyway, I know that going to the polls is really a pain.  So, I want to give some tips to make it a little easier. Last May 2010, my dad and sister was just as excited to vote (as always) that we were actually asking those candidates who went 'house-to-house' to leave a copy of their list.  I hope the following tips will make it half as easy for you, the way it did make it half as easy for us.  Us, because I went with them so that I could have at least a feel of the first automated elections.

  • Prepare a list of your candidates.  And with three days to go, get them ready by now.
  • If you can go online, you can easily find which precinct you are supposed to go by visiting the COMELEC'S ONLINE PRECINCT FINDER.  All you have to do is fill the form with your complete name and date of birth.  Note down the school and precinct number at the bottom of your list of candidates.  This really made it easy for my dad and sister.
  • Vote early.  We were there at the precinct before 7:00 am and we were done before 8:00.  It took us less than an hour.
  • Once you get to the school, there is a table (at least there was last May 2010) just near the entrance.  You can ask these volunteers where you can find your precinct (the one that you found at the Comelec website).
  • Once you located your precinct, there is supposed to be a list there where you have to look for your name and the number that corresponds with your name.  Take note of the number because the poll officer will ask for this and this makes her whole job easier and your time shorter in finding your name.  This is where you are supposed to get your thumb mark before and after voting.
  • Just in case you don't know, there is a special line for senior citizens, persons with disability and pregnant women.  This is according to COMELEC Resolution 10-0326.  You can leave your mom and dads there or you can go with him inside if he's vision is not that good enough.
Comelec Resolution 10-0326
That's it!  Well, last May, we didn't have to bring any pens because we used the one provided.  But I guess, it won't hurt if you bring your own to make it a little faster.  Remember, these poll officers are our honorable teachers.  So, please let's help make their jobs easier for them and this, in turn, will make our voting a lot faster.

And The Winner Is.....

Congratulations to Comment NO. 15, CLUELESS!

I was really so excited about this give-away... my first, ever! And really, really... thank you to all these 22 people who took time to vote! I was actually aiming to get at least 50 comments but with about 262 page views yesterday, I really don't know why only 22 got to vote.

The first comment is entry #1, the second is entry #2, and so on. Sad to say, I have no option but to disqualify those two anonymous entries because you didn't have aliases. Sorry, guys, I don't want to have confusion just in case one of the two wins. This means that the number range for the draw was from 1 to 20.

But anyhow, this is the screen shot of the draw.

CLUELESS, do I know you personally? hehehehe... This actually made it more exciting because I only know the aliases. So, now that we've drawn the winner, CLUELESS, please send me your name and your e-mail address at admin@lagunalife.org so we can talk about where we can meet up and give you the tickets. And be ready for some pictures, because I'd love to have one taken with me and you together.

By the way, the Tag This Bag Contest didn't have any entries at all. I was actually sad letting that prize go, especially now that we are in what we call the longest celebration of the year - Christmas. But anyhow, let me see if I can strike a deal again and put it up once more, and let me see if I can come up with something as easy as this giveaway.

These free tickets are brought to you by our friends from The Sunstar Mall Cinemas.

>> Wednesday, October 20, 2010

My Teacher, My Contributor: Abigail Rose Zaide Juano

>> Tuesday, October 19, 2010

"My first job was neither in the field of Medicine nor Education. I worked in a Japanese-owned company in Carmelray II, Calamba City as a Human Resources Staff. But at that time, my mind says that I wanted to become a doctor, and my heart had a hidden desire - to teach."
Teacher Abbie.
With her students at St Peter's Jakarta, Indonesia

She vividly remembers her kindergarten graduation day. In front of many people, she made it known that she wanted to be a doctor. She was a quiet and obedient student, and was not a topnotch nor a teacher's pet. During elementary, she was the "Most Behaved" pupil for for four straight years. I really can imagine how meek and quiet Abbie was as a student.

College served as an opportunity for Abbie to excel and discover her abilities. She took up Psychology as a prerequisite to her long-time dream of being a doctor, and tried things that she believes will enhance her talents and abilities. Self-motivation was her key to achieving things. She studied and joined extra-curricular activities and became vice-president of the Psychological Function Society of Letran College in Calamba, Laguna. The leadership of her group earned them the Gawad Arriba Award as the best organization in 2003.

All these got Abbie prepared for what life is all about after college. Her first job isn't about teaching nor anything related to the medical field. But this didn't stop Abbie from going on. She took each experience as a stepping stone towards the quest for her passion. Once she discovered that teaching is what lies in her heart, she went ahead and followed its desire.

She, then, took a teaching post when she was only 21. She face college students that were either as old as she or older. At first, it was hard to see where she had to stand. But her training and experience made her adapt and later on, with the help of her colleagues and approachable superiors, Abbie realized that teaching is indeed her passion.
"Aside from sharing the knowledge that I have, inspiring students is my other goal. Teaching, to me, is like stepping on a stage play and showing that you are a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed person while backstage, it's staying awake late at night checking test papers and recording the scores."
In between the pressures of teaching, she still finds time to play the piano or the guitar. Unknown to many, she comes from a family of artists. Her Lolo, David Zaide, Sr., was a piano teacher and her her Lolo's sister, Editha Zaide, was a stage play singer and coloratura soprano.
Taken at the LSEF Sta Cruz Chinese School

If she's not playing these instruments, she likes sketching and painting, aside from scrapbooking and collecting photos. And, of course, being in touch with her friends and students thru Facebook and other social networking sites is a thing that she also tries to squeeze in between.

Abbie has been to Indonesia to teach for quite some time and traveled some places. But being born in Pagsanjan, and raised in Magdalena, her heart always comes back to Laguna, a place she says she loves and believes to be more beautiful than those places she has been.

Currently, she is studying (while teaching at the St. Joseph Oasis Center for Spirituality in Pagsanjan, Laguna) at the University of the Philippines - Open University to earn a Diploma in Language and Literacy Education. When she finishes this year, this will give her the opportunity to gear up to a master's degree.

Young as she is, her desire to be an inspiration to her students is worth more than anything. She feels fulfilled whenever she sees her students smile. A hard day's work means nothing to her when she sees her pupils study hard and work hard and appreciate their lessons.
"Yes, I live and breathe teaching. Maybe I didn't become a doctor, but the teaching profession is also like healing someone in an extraordinary way like leaving a mark in somebody's heart."
Teacher Abbie. My Teacher, My Hero this Tuesday.

Note:
Abbie is a writer even when she was young. She was a part of the elementary paper of their school, "L' Immaculata," and "The Bosconian" when she was in high school. Later on, we will see her works published here because I believe this lady can write.

Yesterday's Loot

>> Sunday, October 17, 2010

Since I wrote about what's going on at the mall this week, I did go to the mall to look what's on sale. I wanted to watch the show but unfortunately, when we were getting down the jeepney, the talents for Miss Gay 2010 were just getting out of the mall. Yeah, I did miss the show.

What I really wanted was to get that 'fried ice cream.' I went with my aunt and sister so that I can share the big serving (is it really that big?). I didn't want to chill while strolling around the mall. But, the line was long and I didn't bring enough patience, so I said, let's just buy the Miguelito upstairs and start our 'mall tour.'

The stores were really offering surprising discounts but as usual, my feet led me to the bookshop. There was big bookshelf at the innermost part of the Pandayan Bookshop with a lot of books. As always, I get dizzy when I smell the scent of books. But dizzy in a good way. I've always love their smell. I started flipping through to look for something that might interest me... and....

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and Letting Go of the Camera by Brooks Jensen
I got this two books in very good condition. White pages, good covers and really, really smelling good. I checked out the pages for creepy crawlies but found none. It's nice and clean and in trade paperbacks.... really good. Buy one, take one... you pay whichever is higher. These two for only Php95.00.... That's genuine sale, right?

Oh well, I was really looking for "Angela's Ashes" since I finished reading Frank McCourt's "'Tis." Although I didn't really like 'Tis, I am intrigued by Angela's Ashes. It's a good thing I didn't have to go far to get my books from now on.

Anyway, my sister got a hairbrush and a couple of hair accessories from Broadway Gems and she was surprised that she really got a big discount for the things she bought. That's another genuine sale, right?

You still have a few hours left today if you want to get some things on sale.

Getting Ready For a Bad Weather

>> Saturday, October 16, 2010

Typhoon Megi entered the Philippine area of responsibility last night.  By then, it was named Juan.  It's expected to have its landfall by tomorrow, Sunday afternoon.

It's a good thing that here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, we are still having a sunny day.  That's why I opted not to make this post this morning.  We should be thankful for this sunny day today, because in the lunchtime news earlier, floods already started in Malabon; and Juan isn't even here yet.

But our good friend, Teacher Anna Liz, suggested, too, that I come up with tips on what to prepare as we get ready for the bad weather.  I told her that I was thinking to come up with it later today.  But, I changed my mind.  I am posting this now even if the rains are still not here yet.  It's good to be prepared early on.  I don't want to wait until tonight.  Neither should you.

These are the things that we usually prepare when we hear that there is a typhoon coming.  I know there are still more, so please add it in the comments below.  If you have something else in mind, please.... PLEASE put it in the comments below.  It might help someone when help is needed.

  • Start filling up your water storage vessels.  It could be anything from potable water to water fit enough for washing ourselves with and the dishes.
  • Buy some food that doesn't need to be cooked.  A bunch of ready-to-eat canned foods will be the most practical.
  • Check the batteries of your flashlights and radios.  You should be buying new ones every time a typhoon is about to come.
  • If you think that your roofs have holes and leaks, check them out before rain sets in.  It's hard and hazardous to climb up once rain sets in.
  • Check your 'alunod' for some clogging.  This might be a problem later on when it rains for the longest time.  This might be a cause for a greater damage in the house if not looked into.
  • Make sure that everything that might turn lose is fastened securely.  Flying objects become hazardous during storms for people who have to go out during that time.
  • Once the news of a storm gets out, keep yourself updated by listening to the radio about the latest bulletins and announcements.
Go check these things out now.

Another Kabalikat Opening

I grew up in the street of P. Burgos in Sta. Cruz, Laguna and I can say that it's really one of the busiest streets at the poblacion area. It is, in fact, one of the only two streets that will take you to our town's public market. Someone who's going to the market will have to pass this street.

Years passed, we moved to outer barangays to get away from the traffic. But I never fail to always look back and see the changes. In fact, at about the same time last year, when I went home from Dubai, I wanted to check that very place to see what are the changes. There wasn't much.

But this year, everyone should look forward to the opening of another 'kabalikat' store. The Pandayan Bookshop who is already at the Sunstar Mall, is opening another store at the same street where I grew up. On P. Burgos Street, just about across from Mercury Drug and Bank of the Philippine Islands, the bookstore will open on October 28, 2010.

Pandayan Bookshop is our kabalikat sa pag-aaral. They are here to make school easier for students and teachers by offering us an extensive inventory of school supplies.

Pardon My Dust

>> Friday, October 15, 2010

If you are frequently visiting this site and seeing changes most of the time, please pardon my dust.  In my quest to find the layout that will best suit my purpose, I find it really hard.

After several trials, this should be the one that best suits my goal.  But I will still be always on the lookout for anything that would improve the site.  In fact, I am in the process of learning new things that will help me find what's best.

If you have any ideas or a time to spare to help me out, please do.  I would be very glad to know that there are others out there who believes in my goals and would be willing to share their knowledge.

A Genuine Message of Hope and Trust

>> Thursday, October 14, 2010

A Matter of Trust is a post I have written on my other blog here last September 11, 2010.  A post about the 33 miners trapped 2,000 feet below the ground.
Manifest no distrust, or you may invite the danger you appear to apprehend.
And indeed, they were saved.

For the rescue to be complete, it will take about one hour for one miner to get to the surface.

Riding the capsule built by the Chilean Navy named as the Fenix, a miner has to take a sort of a medicine that will prevent him from suffering from nausea or dizziness as he makes his ascent.  The metal capsule used to rescue them rotates by itself while moving upwards and might cause this feeling.

Aside from the medicine, they were required to wear protective sunglasses and thick sweaters.  The sweaters are to protect them from the sudden shift from the 30-degree temperature down below to the nearly-freezing point on the surface.  Moreover, the dark sunglasses will help their eyes to adjust from the darkness down the collapsed mine to the normal lighting conditions on the surface.

My respect and admiration goes out to everyone who helped and organized the rescue aside from all the 33 miners.  But my heart goes out to those six rescuers who risked their lives in going down that collapsed mine to assist these 33 miners.

While the whole world rejoices as each of these miners made it to the surface, I couldn't wait until it was these rescuers' turn.  I was teary-eyed as the last of these six heroes made it to the surface, officially ending the rescue operation.

69 days, 33 miners, 6 rescuers.

May all these people serve as an inspiration to all of us as they showed us a genuine message of HOPE and TRUST.

**The quote was from the book, "The Last of the Mohicans," by James Fenimore Cooper.

During The Next Ten Days

Do not be surprised if during the next ten days, you will hear new jingles from odd-sounding loudspeakers or banners made of tarpaulins or just plain paper with a picture that is quite familiar to you.

Welcome to the campaign period of the Barangay Elections!

Taken during the 2010 National Electtions - May 10, 2010

During the next ten days, those who are running for their coveted positions will come knocking at your door politely hoping that they will have your vote or even your whole family's.

If there is one thing we can do for the change that our country is all working hard for, one of the simplest way is to offer a prayer for a peaceful campaign period as well as a peaceful election day.

Mall-Wide Sale!

Christmas is just 71 days away as of this writing.  Many of you may have started their Christmas shopping this early or some are just about ready to start as soon as they receive this month's paycheck.

These days, we don't need to worry about getting stuck in the traffic when going to the mall.  The Sunstar Mall is just a few minutes away from wherever we are here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, or maybe about thirty minutes max when you're from the nearby towns.

On these days, the mall-wide sale will offer surprising discounts on selected shops and items.

This will be a great time for you and your family to experience shopping and eating good food without having to go through traffic and tiring yourself and your kids.

So, go get your purse and get ready to splurge!  Don't forget to bring your list of 'inaanaks' so you don't miss out anyone.

All Mud and Laughter

>> Wednesday, October 13, 2010

One of the things I love about living in the province is the chance to get very close to nature.

Do you remember when you were a kid and had the chance to go out, play, get all mud up but full of joy in your heart?

You go out and find playmates who eventually become your friends until you get old.  Getting your toe nails packed with mud and your shorts and shirts soiled with dust and mud is all part of being a kid and growing up.  You have all the time to look for ants, grasshoppers, butterflies, dragonflies and all those things that you find in nature.  At this age, it was just all play.  But later on, we realize that it was where you learned camaraderie, sportsmanship, love for nature, some abilities here and there and love for friends.

My Teacher, My Classmate: Anna Liz Arenas

>> Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Teacher Anna Liz Arenas
Classmate Anna Liz.

I sat beside her in high school because our seating arrangement comes alphabetically, almost every year and every class for the whole four years.

All those times, I didn't know she wanted to be a teacher, just like her mom.  She was quiet as a high school student.  But, even in those days, she will willingly answer your questions on almost anything.  She is always glad to share what she knows about things, especially on topics that she's fond of .  She's also a very meek student, classmate and friend.  During all those four years of belonging to the same class, I never heard her complain about something or someone.

She studied college at the Philippine Normal University belong to batch 1988 and almost a year after, she started teaching at the Don Bosco School here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.  Many of my friends' sons and daughters have been her students, and she was even my nephew's adviser in second grade.  During those times, we just said Hi and Hello if we came across each other at the school corridors because she was always busy talking to her present and former students.  I think it has become a big part of her life because she taught until March 2008, a whole nineteen years of teaching.

Teacher Anna Liz.

That is how she is affectionately called by her students.

Anna Liz proudly says that she is a disciplinary teacher, something that I have always believed to be an effective way of teaching kids.  She also encourages parents to really take part in the education of their kids.  In fact, she says she welcomed parents who approached her to be updated with their kids' status in class.  She was glad that parents do this.

But aside from being a disciplinary teacher, she is a friend to her students when not in class.  Part of her achievements - which I believe no one has thought of yet at that time - was being the leader and gig organizer of youth bands.  She believes that there is nothing wrong with being part of a rock band, just as long as they stay away from vices like smoking, drinking and drugs.  "Walang masamang magbanda, basta NO to drugs, drinking, smoking, etc."   Those were her words.

For Anna Liz, part of the challenges of teaching is coming up with different strategies and approaches to make the children learn faster and to make the learning experience more fun.  The never-ending loads of paper works like checking the papers, reading their term papers and computing of grades, and that's just naming a few.  Along with these comes the stress that comes from noisy pupils and their laziness and at times, those parents who seemed to have gone over the limits of complaining most of the time.

There were many other achievements but I believe this kind of fulfillment for Anna Liz makes her belong to the very few teachers whose passion is teaching.  If there is one big fulfillment for Anna Liz, it is seeing these students walk up that stage and get their diplomas.  There is nothing like that feeling for her.  She shares that one fulfillment with every kid's parent who feels joy like no other in having their kids finish school.

These days, Anna Liz stopped teaching.  But I'm sure she's having a good time enjoying her life.  Free from those nights that she didn't have a choice but to check those quizzes and tests, or computing her students' grades.  I've always known she likes Incubus and even enthusiastically told me some trivia about the band and her favorite Incubus songs.   She's also a big fan of The Beatles and can tell you the title of each song in less than five notes.  She now has more time listening to music and doing other things she love - aside from teaching.

The Good Old Bayong

>> Monday, October 11, 2010

The government's drive to at least reduce the use of plastic is a very good start in helping our environment heal.  In fact, I believe that the towns of Paete, Pagsanjan and Los Baños in Laguna started way back last year.  It was actually a big news for me when I got home from Dubai.  I was actually happy to hear that they are doing something this good.  But I believe this kind of thing couldn't be ordered immediately.  It can't be implemented right away because we need to create awareness.

One of the purpose of this site is to create awareness not just of events and activities in the community.  I also want to help spread information of whatever type which might help the community and the country as well.  Done in my own little way, in my special little place in the internet.  So, as a way to help the government spread the news about reducing the use of plastic, I am writing this article about one of my good old favorites.

Do you remember the bayong?

This is how I see the history of the good old bayong.  The good old bag used to be a market essential for our lolas during their times.  It was what they bring when they to go to market.  Then, it evolved to the fish net, and eventually, those plastic bags.  The bayong then was revived as a fashion statement.  It was revived as an alternative for office bags or shoulder bags, but I think its time to shine was short or underrated.  The fashion designers attached accessories like ribbons, beads, crystals or anything to make it look different and in style.  But as for me, the bayong is a beauty in itself.  You don't have to put anything on it to make it elegant.  It speaks elegance in itself.

But whatever we say, our dependable bayong is here to stay.  Especially now that the government is pushing to stop the use of plastic.  This is a shop in Paete, Laguna, somewhere near the Eastern College.  I took this picture only last September.  As I said earlier, in Paete, they are already reducing their plastic bag usage since last year.  I guess that's why this store sells different sizes and types of bayong.

So, the next time you go to market, I think it's better to get yourself one of these bayongs to help us help the environment.

Something's Cookin'

>> Friday, October 8, 2010

I couldn't help but be curious about what's going on in that stall at the mall this afternoon.  I moved closer until I got to the side, near the 'chef.'

It takes two minutes to turn the liquid to ice cream, and about a minute to put it all in the cup.  It's called fried ice cream.  At least that's what the sign says.

The Question on Forgiving

Most of us, if not all, have asked and will ask this question at least once in our lifetime: How do I forgive?

Whether it's about a broken business deal or a love relationship, it's not always easy.  We ask our friends how, but we still couldn't afford to heed to their advises.  We look for something to read to find out what's the best thing to do, but still, questions remain.

This article about "The Art of Forgiving" comes from our very own neighbor here in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.  Dottie Libiran wrote about the art and was able to make it to the front page of the website.  The website is for anyone who wants to write about anything and have the chance to make it to the front page of the online magazine.  Fellow members and writers rate the articles if they are worthy enough to publish on the front page.  Her article made it last September 25, 2010.

Saturday Mornings

I've posted about where to get fit and healthy a few weeks ago.  This is where most of the ladies from around town go on weekdays: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  Most of these ladies come from a whole day's work from their offices or from tasks, errands and chores at home.

But if you can't make it during late afternoons on weekdays, it's not a problem.  I learned that on Saturday mornings at 6:00 am, there is a session that is being headed by Olie and it's for free and open to both men and women.  You can ahead and join them at the grounds of the Sta. Cruz, Laguna Municipal Hall.

Oh, don't forget to bring your towels and water bottles.
